The Plan

In late November I'm leaving land.

My parents and I have been working to restore a 31-foot Island Packet sailboat, and when all is well we're taking off for a few months. The plan is to leave from Mobile Bay, work our way down the coast of Florida, through the Florida Keys, and hopefully be able to jump across to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

The idea is to spend as much time as we want wherever we want. If we like a place, why not stay for a few weeks? If we hate a place, why not leave tomorrow? It's an attempt at freedom for us, I think. For me, at least.

People ask how I spend my time since I'm not school, and I tell them I'm working on the boat. I grind, paint, and epoxy bottoms; I buff hulls; I paint bootstripes; I clean mildew; I reshape and fare rudders. I like it.
